Welcome To The Gold Monkey Forum

A Little Forum History:

We're a group of friends who met at Scared Monkeys over the course of the past three years. For a while, Scared Monkeys had a chat room, and many of us enjoyed our chat sessions there. When SM decided to discontinue their chat room, Carnut very graciously offered to host one for us. Carnut liked the old TV show Tales of the Gold Monkey, so we became the Gold Monkey Forum/Chat.

What We're About

We are interested in a wide variety of topics. There is (naturally) quite a lot of interest in the Natalee Holloway case, but we also discuss current news topics, the areas where we live, items we have for sale, etc. In the chat room, we discuss more personal topics that we are not comfortable with having posted on an open forum. These topics include light-hearted discussions of our pets and our hobbies, as well as the more serious subjects of personal illnesses, budget issues, and family problems. An important part of our chat room communication also includes being mutually supportive of one another.

If You Want To Join Us

While anyone can read at the Gold Monkey Forum, membership is required for posting and chatting. Anyone who can post will have access to the chatroom as well. Because we discuss quite personal topics in the chatroom, we feel that we need to have some knowledge of new members. For that reason, we ask that anyone requesting to join us be referred by a current member. Once the referral has been made, current members will vote on whether or not to accept the new member. A "yes" vote from a majority of members is required in order for a new applicant to be accepted.

If You Are Accepted

If you are accepted as a member, you are encouraged to join us in the chat room. We have been meeting nightly there beginning at around 8:30 - 9:00 pm Eastern Time. The chat room button will not show up until you are logged in as a member, and then you will see it on the line of buttons at the top of the page.

If You Aren't Accepted

If you apply for membership and are not accepted, please don't take it as an insult. While there have been some people who applied and were not accepted, the reason was that not enough current members knew the person well enough to feel comfortable discussing personal topics with them. A "no" decision is never meant as a personal judgment against the applicant.

Important Note

There will be some sections of the forum that new posters will not be allowed to read/post in until they have made a minimum of 100 posts. This is to allow time for new posters and "seasoned" posters to get to know one another before being allowed access to personal information.

The "Muffs" Rule

The gist of the "Muffs" Rule is "What's said in chat stays in chat." It is called the "Muffs" rule because when anyone says anything slightly off color, our beloved Lalas shouts "Where are my (ear) muffs?" This colorful saying has now morphed to indicate that if someone says something in chat, we must all promise not to repeat it, just as if we were wearing our ear muffs and didn't hear it. The "Muffs" Rule is very sacred, and copying or repeating anything from chat will lead to permanent banning from Gold Monkeys.

Maybe another reminder that we all would appreciate is this: Things said in chat are kept in chat and not copied and disseminated to anyone outside the GM forum. There is a post about this somewhere written by one of our other members.  We all know that anything said on the internet is not completely private, so be sure that what you say in the forum or in chat should be nothing you would not say to anyone's face.  That way you have nothing to worry about should someone violate the rules and copy things and give them to other people.
